The CAM Foundation is a 501 (c) (3) organization that was created to honor the legacy of Curtis Albert Monson and to reflect his desire to ensure underserved youth receive a well-rounded education inside and outside of the classroom.
Curt originally founded N.E.E.D in 1996 (Neighborhood Economic and Educational Development) Corporation, which was the predecessor of CAM Foundation. N.E.E.D focused on low-income housing and educational programs—two of Curt’s passions. After retiring from LAPD, Curt became the CEO of his own company, CAM Enterprises, investing in real estate and providing property management services.
Because Curt loved real estate, he naturally gravitated toward providing low-income families with quality housing in the Los Angeles area as a way to give back to the Community. In addition, he provided scholarships and funding for education and afterschool programs for those kids growing up in the very same community.
After Curt passed away, his youngest daughter Catrice embraced the opportunity to give back as well. She believed that the best way to honor her dad, while creating her own vision was to create a new non-profit using her dad’s initials —C-A-M. After a great deal of reflection, Catrice realized that CAM needed a mission and it did not take long for each initial to take on its own meaning.
Community – Focusing on Los Angeles, the area that the Monson Family grew up in. They recognized the importance of creating a sense of unity and connection to those around you.
Academics – Concentrating on the educational foundation and fundamentals that Curt stressed to everyone he came in contact with. Catrice also believes her education has been one of the key elements of her own success.
Mentoring – Because both Catrice and Curt believe that reaching back and sharing your own successes and failures, providing knowledge and creating access to those around you is a duty, not an option.
Today CAM carries Curt’s spirit and beliefs and infuses it into every educational and community program it supports along with every scholarship CAM provides.
